Health and Physical Education Curriculum Map

Curriculum maps help teachers plan the year to ensure standards within a grade level or content area will be covered. Curriculum mapping is a process for collecting and recording curriculum-related data that identifies core skills and content taught and assessments used for each subject area and grade level. The completed curriculum map becomes a tool that helps teachers keep track of what has been taught and plan what will be taught.

Use the table below to create a curriculum map for physical and health education in your classroom. Identify a grade level and answer the following questions to help you create your curriculum map:

1. What content standards and program and student outcomes will this unit address?

2. What kinds of long-term, independent accomplishments are desired (transfer skills)?

3. What thought-provoking questions will foster inquiry, meaning-making, and transfer?

4. What specifically do you want students to understand? What important ideas do you want them to grasp?

5. What inferences should they make? What misconceptions are predictable and will need overcoming?

6. What skills and basic concepts should students know and be able to recall?

7. What assessments will provide valid evidence of transfer and understanding?

8. How will you preassess and formatively assess? How will you adjust, if needed (as suggested by feedback)?

9. Does the learning plan reflect principles of learning and best practices?

While designing your curriculum map, include the following:

1. Themes (such as Heart Health Month, Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, Alcohol Awareness Month, and so on)

2. Seasons – What particular activities fit best in the seasons (such as track in spring or snow-shoeing in winter)?

3. Vocabulary

4. Equipment safety

An example has been provided for you. Include at least one row per instructional month (for example, September through June). Add rows as necessary.
