Although many police officers demonstrate ethical behavior and perform their work in an exemplary manner, some officers do engage in unprofessional conduct. Abuse of discretion and authority, use of excessive force, discriminatory practices, dishonesty, and unprofessional behavior are all examples of officer misconduct. The police subculture plays a critical role as a behavior control mechanism by creating a psychological and physical dependent environment for officers. This subculture needs to be examined as a factor in unethical practices, and possibly changed.

One of those theorists was Immanuel Kant, who was considered one of the leading philosophers of his time. He believed that morality relied on absolute rules and that it was our duty as a society to do the right thing. Kant’s philosophy means that morality should not be based on feelings or emotions, but rather on the concepts of duty, obligation, and rationality.

• Examine Kant’s ideals of human morality. What is a moral action as opposed to an unethical action?

The advent of cell phone cameras and the rise of social media has made it possible for anyone to share police encounters and for those encounters to be distributed across all media platforms, sometimes resulting in skewed perceptions. This trend, and the resulting public attention, has sometimes led to negative public perception of the criminal justice community and emotional responses against police officers. Some of these emotionally charged reactions have resulted in police officers being injured or killed.

From a professional standpoint, consider what would be ideal solutions to alleviate violence against police officers.

• Should those who commit violence against officers be held to higher than normal criminal charges for their actions?

• Do you believe that the media overemphasizes the issue of violence committed by and towards police officers to enhance ratings? If so, how?
